Banh Mi Austin Texas

You might say that the creation of the Banh Mi sandwich was an historical inevitability. Many great dishes have evolved out of cultural mergers brought about either by war or otherwise. The French occupation of Vietnam during the 1950’s is another example. The classic French baguette merged with Vietnamese bbq popular in the small country villages, and gradually made its way to Hanoi and the larger cities.

The Vietnamese migration to the US after war ended gave birth to many restaurants featuring the amazing pho and of course Banh Mi. Here in Austin I tried my first Banh Mi at the Tam Deli on North Lamar. I loved the flavors and crispness.

The Elizabeth Street Café on South First Street does a wonderful version with a smooth duck foie gras. Incredibly tasty! If you haven’t yet sampled this delightful treat, by all means do so!
