Chinatown Thai Pepper Basil Shrimp

The history of Chinatown restaurant is nothing short of remarkable. Ronald Cheng opened this spot on Bee caves Road in 1983 with an assortment of chef-driven cuisine from various regions of China. He was a brash young talent at the time and he had reason to be. His skill in the kitchen was such that he not only raised the bar for Chinese food in Austin, he completely shattered it!

After opening another spot on West 5th St. he opened a store on Mopac at Greystone. They introduced mind-boggling dim sum service that captured the market.

But Ronald never stopped innovating. The picture above, the stunning Thai Pepper Basil Shrimp, is an example of how he keeps elevating his game. The recent addition of soup dumplings to the menu and a wonderful Monglian Beef, along with some of the tastiest Shrimp Lo Mein in the area, are just a few more examples.

Several years ago, Ronald reopened Chinatown Westlake at the original location after a hiatus. If a anything, it’s even better! Fresh off a tasting expedition to Taiwan, he’s come back with new ideas and intriguing menu plans. I will be heading out soon for a tasting.

As always I expect I’ll be blown away.
