Twin Liquors Wine of the Month for November

MacMurray Pinot Noir Sonoma Coast 2006. This is a very drinkable and and relatively inexpensive Pinot Noir. Actor Fred MacMurray purchased a huge ranch in Napa Valley the 1940’s and began to cultivate grapes. The area known as the Russian River Valley is an ideal growing region for Pinot Noir. Little has changed at the ranch since that time. Winemaker Susan Doyle makes wines that reflect the old notion of “terroir”: the special qualities that weather, land, and the hand of man or woman. This is a very good wine for under $20. It’ll be available for tasting at a number of Twin Liquors stores from November 11-14th.

Another wine available for tasting is the Sokol Blosser Evolution. The name has been shortened to “Evolution” and it’s a highly popular wine among fans of white wines. It’s a blend made from 9 varieties of grapes, each pressed individually. It pairs beautifully with cooked fish and or even sushi/sashimi. Again, a really nice wine for under $20. I found it to be gently sweet with mild citric nuances.

Ask for a taste of Evolution at participating Twin stores from Nov. 11th to the 14th.

Twin Liquors Wine of the Month for October

Twin Liquors continues its weekly tasting series October 10th with two very interesting and affordable wines of the month. The Mount Nelson Sauvignon Blanc (New Zealand) is a great Indian summer (for Texas anyway) wine that gets rave reviews from wine drinkers who appreciate taste and value. It’s been characterized as having a relatively big nose with gooseberry and floral notes but the word that seems to crop up most often is “refreshing.”

Another favorite is the Graffigna-Malbec from Argentina. This is redolent of lush, ripe fruit with an easy finish. The kind of wine you could keep sipping only to discover that you’ve killed the entire bottle!

Both of these affordable wines are available at one of the many Twin Liquors stores across the Austin area.

Twin Liquors Offers Tastings each Friday from 4-7pm

Wine fans can now sample wines BEFORE they buy them at select Twin Liquors Stores. Each Friday from 4-7pm, the city wide tasting will offer shoppers the opportunity to sample several wines that Twin has previewed on their Wine of the Month feature on www.diningoutwithrobbalon.com.

For example, on August 1, the Indaba Chenin Blanc and the Holy Cow Merlot will be the featured wines. The Indaba has a light yellow color and opens with a pineapple and light banana bouquet. Nice finish with a touch of spice. It’s a medium-bodied refreshing summer wine from South Africa.

The Charles Smith Holy Cow Merlot is a somewhat fruitier and lighter summertime wine. Various tasting notes have indicated cherries, pipe tobacco and spice. Many tasters have suggested it is smooth as velvet.

So you can find out for yourself when you taste these on Friday August 1. Go to www.twinliquors.com for a list of the participating stores.

Twin Liquors Wine of the Month: Man Vintners Chenin Blanc

Chenin Blancs are usually great summer wines and the Man Vintners from South Africa is no exception.

Sourced from various vineyards in an area generally regarded as very favorable to Chenin Blancs, the Pederberg Hills Region, the Man Vintners has a unique, deliciously tangy character that pairs well with many foods or makes an excellent aperitif. It has lively aromas of tropical fruits (including kiwi) and melons.

This is value priced at $8.99 and reflects the vastly increased quality in wines coming from South Africa (you know my fondness for the Ernie Els Stellenbosch ‘04).

Twin Liquors Wine of the Month: Windy Lane Sauvignon Blanc

It’s summer. What better time for a wine that pairs beautifully with creamy pastas, seafood, and medium cheeses. Or one that drinks just fine on its own.

The Windy Lane Sauvignon Blanc is sourced from vineyards above 700 feet in the Napa Valley. The cool growing region produced a wine with ripe pear, crisp steel and mineral flavors. It’s a great summer wine and it can be purchased for $12.99 at Twin Liquors.

Twin Liquors Wine of the Month: The Ocaso Malbec ’05

I have lately become enamored with the Malbec grape, a dark-skinned beauty that seems to do wonderfully in the higher climates of Argentina.. And I want to call your attention to the Ocaso Malbec ’05. This South American wine has an intense ruby color and an enticing aroma of ripe plum and wild berries. The berry flavors are joined by accents of spice, chocolate and a hint of tobacco on the palate. The vibrant tannins give the wine a beautiful structure and an amazingly lone finish.

The Ocaso is made from vineyards in Tupungato at 3500 feet of altitude. The region has a desert climate with 320 days of sun a year. Water comes from the snow melt in the Andes mountains.

The wine is on sale now at Twin Liquors for $12.99 and is a great value at that price.

Gruet Blanc de Noirs: Twin Liquors Wine of the Month

Given the amount of chocolates that many of us still have left over from Valentine’s day, what better way to have yet another romantic evening than to dip some of those chocolate strawberries into a glass of Gruet Blanc de Noirs. This sparkling wine from New Mexico is one of my favorites and I actually prefer the Blanc de Noirs (white sparkling wine made from black Pinot Noir grapes) over the Brut. This is a bargain at $14.99. It pairs really nicely with foods other than chocolate as well.

“The rich and toasty character of the Blanc de Noirs is balanced and superb. It froths up in a foamy mousse when poured then falls back to a lasting bubble stream.”

Twin Liquors Wine of the Month: 2005 Windy Lane Dry Creek Zinfandel

Nothing like a good class of Zinfandel from the Dry Creek Appellation in Sonoma County, CA.!

This is a perfect wine for January or February. It has a rich and peppery quality and with structured yet elegant tannins. And it’s produced exclusively for Twin Liquors in Austin by winemaker David Sayers. Says Sayers” I love to pair zins, especially the Windy Lane, with all sorts of foods from steak to salmon and from cheese to chocolate. Value priced at $14.99 and available in all Twin Liquor stores.

Borgo San Leo Prosecco $10.99: Twin Liquors Wine of the Month

This lovely little Brut is one of the most refreshing value wines for the holiday season. It has a light, crisp nose of apples and it’s fruity and dry to the taste. It is considerably less sweet than most Proseccos. The finish is pleasant and lingers nicely.

The Borgo works as an aperitif or with entrees.

And here’s a thought for a holiday drink special: The Velvet Amber. One part Grand Marnier, one part cranberry juice, and three parts Borgo San Leo Prosecco.

McMurray Ranch Central Coast Pinot Noir ‘05:
Twin Liquors Wine of the Month

The holidays are fast approaching. And why not enjoy some silky Pinot Noir: a perfect complement to much seasonal fare. Twin Liquors has a special on McMurray Ranch Central Coast Pinot Noir for $14.99 or two bottles for $25.49.

I’ve tasted the McMurray and I agree with the winemaker’s assessments: the ’05 has “an expressive fruit character exhibiting bright aromas of blue and red fruits of cherry, ripe blueberries and dark current. The flavors are melded together with earthy notes, perfectly balanced with the nuance of sweet vanilla from the oak aging.”

It’s a fun and very enjoyable value wine and there’s plenty in stock at Twin Liquors.

Borgo Sanleo Pinot Grigio / Garganega Blend $7.99:
Twin Liquors Wine of the Month

When I was a kid growing up in Conn. we had a very brief Indian Summer: suffice to say that Austin's is considerably longer. Thus, the need for a light, refreshing wine that can be sipped pool or deck side presents itself,

Garganega is the grape responsible for Soave, a much-hailed white from Northern Italy. The blend of pinot grigio and garganega results in a soft and delicate white that goes well with light hors d' ouevres, white fish, poultry or by itself on one of our hot fall days.
This wine can also be used to make up one hell of a batch of Sangria.

And don't forget, my all-time favorite South African wine, the Ernie Els Stellenbosch '04 is now available at the Highway 71 Twin Liquors Store.

The 2005 Chateau La Freynelle: Twin Liquors Wine of the Month
for August

2005 Chateau La Freynelle Blanc, Entre-Deux-Mers, $9.99.

Situated in the Entre Deux Mers, Château La Freynelle is a 75 hectare estate, with a mixture of clay and limestone soil, which is well suited to the production of Merlot (the predominant variety in the final blend).

Finnegan’s Lake Cabernet Sauvignon 2005: Twin Liquors Wine of the Month (June 2007)

This California cab is one of the fun surprises of the new year. According to Wine Spectator, this wine provides an “outstanding price/value relationship” The 2005 is just the second vintage but it promises to be a quantum leap forward. For $15, this is a great pour and a great buy.

This month’s wine of the month is the Joseph Phelps Innisfree 2005. This is a Cabernet Sauvignon that retails for $19.95. Phelps assembled wine from young or newly developed vineyard blocks for this label. The wine contains bright, cherry-like favors and is made to be enjoyed over the near term.

The $19.95 is an excellent price as we have seen it online for $24.95.
