South Congress Mega Trailer Lot in Jeopardy, Again!

Posted by on Nov 8, 2012 in Closings

The trailer lot on 1600 South Congress that begins with the Mighty Cone at one end, and ends with the familiar silver Hey Cupcake! trailer at the other end, is in jeopardy once again. Only this time it looks serious.

The reason is that a luxury hotel is in the works on the grounds of the trailer park. It’s been leased, yet again, from an adjacent church for a 2nd 98-year term. The previous controller of the property could not put the plan for the hotel into a workable scenario. But now, it appears that the hotel will become a reality under the new management team.

And yes, as someone joked on Food Thursday today on 590 KLBJ-AM, that’s why trailers have wheels. But it’s not as simple as that. The trailer lot has been a big part of the gentrification plan for SO CO. It has blended in nicely into the quirky vibe that characterizes the shops, stores, and restaurants in that area of South Congress that’s South of Riverside and extends up to Oltorf. Of course a luxury hotel would bring huge revenue into the area but once again, at what cultural cost?

As Joni Mitchell sang, “they paved paradise and put up a parking lot.” Seems like we’re headed down that path again.
