Every time I walk into Threadgills,
I get this overwhelming sensation of comfort. Maybe it's a combination
of the history of the place and my personal history with it. I know
the food will be delivered on time, attentively, and that it will be
good. Trust me on this, there are a lot of places that serve so-called
comfort food that do not evoke a sense of comfort in me. Threadgills
does.
I have gone there for many years. How many. Well,
put it this way, the only time I ever spanked my now 16 year old daughter
was in the parking lot of Threadgills when she was three. She had taken
it upon herself to throw all the to go boxes of food, huge portions
even then, at her sister in the back of the car. I share one similar
credo with my two dogs. Mess with my food and you mess with me!
And Threadgills still delivers after all these years.
At both locations on N. Lamar and Riverside, owner Eddie Wilson has
preserved what Kenneth Threadgill started all those many years ago.
Good, simple food and Austintatious fun. I like the fried Okra and the
Broccoli rice casserole on the veggie side. Likewise the sauteed yellow
squash. And who can resist their piquant, southwest style corn off the
cob? Or those mounds of mashed potatoes with a creamy and very tasty
gravey?
On the main course side, I love the chicken fried
pork chop. Tender and juicy, these boneless center cuts with cream gravy
just ooze comfort. And how about the pot roast. It's braised and roasted
with onions, celery, carrots and potatoes. It's seriously good.
I also enjoy the chicken fried chicken. The meat
comes out moist and plump and the gravy is the perfect complement. The
batter is great as well. And what review would be complete without a
mention of their scrumptious catfish?
The fish is always cooked to perfection and the
tastes just deliver, time after time.
The last burger I had there came out a little on
the dry side for my taste. But, comfort is about having your needs met.
So, quickly, and efficiently, they brought me another one. This time
cooked perfectly. I could go on...but I think you get the idea. Threadgills
is one of those quintessentially Austin places that make us what we
are in the river city. And we can all take some comfort in that.
For Fox 7 news, I'm Rob Balon, dining out.
