This is a story about a
marriage: and it's not your typical girl meets boy, they fall in love,
and live happily ever after. This is about girl meets restaurant, falls
in love with the business, and devotes nearly every waking moment to
the object of her affection.
Meet Suzi Yi, the proprietor of Suzi's China Grill
at Shoal Creek and Anderson Lane. She is the effervescent and endlessly
enthusiastic helmsman of her ship, and like the owner immortalized in
Don Henly's Sunset Grill, she knows all her customers by name.
I have been a Suzi's fan for many moons. And why
not? Her appetizers alone are worth a visit. The flash-fried Sesame
Scallops that are dipped in a comforting batter and then rolled in sesame
seeds are a treat. On first bite, they effect a mini taste explosion
that is very pleasing to the palate. I am equally fond of the Peking
Ravioli's which is Suzi's euphemism for pork and vegetable dumplings.
I like mine with soy, a little vinegar, and some chili oil. Very tasty.
And get them panfried.
And equally good are the Seafood Dumplings. Steamed, they consist of
shrimp, scallops and crab meat all blended together. They have a very
pristine flavor that's accentuated by the thin layer of dumpling skin.
Moving on to the entrees, you have to try Suzi's
Firecracker Prawns. These are jumbo prawns that are flash fried in a
wonderful garlic sauce that leans a bit to the nuclear side. Loved every
bite. The sherry wine sauce works exceptionally well with this dish.
Another treat is Suzi's Lemon Scallops. It starts with scallops dipped
in batter and covered with singularly mellow lemon sauce. The flavors
are quite unique and very rewarding. They can also do this dish shrimp.
In the mood for noodles? Try The Szechwan Noodles. In San Francisco's
Chinatown, they might call this dish Tan Tan Noodles. You begin with
sautéed garlic, ground chicken, scallions and chilis combined
with hot egg noodles served with a garnish of cucumbers and bean sprouts.
You cannot top this dish for taste along with texture. A note of caution
however: If your taste runs to the blander side of life, don't order
this dish!
Suzi's has recently opened a Sushi Bar and on both
occasions, the sushi was fresh and tasty. The Spicy Tuna roll was a
blast and the Poison Roll, which consisted of tuna, salmon, cream cheese,
cucumbers and lettuce was a delight. Also the Sumo Roll was certainly
worth your time: this consisted of tuna, yellow tail, salmon, smelt,
and raddish sprouts. Definitely a must try!
So take a visit to Suzi's China Grill. Where the
art of care and feeding has been elevated to an entirely new level.
