Sushi Sake is a sleek,
sophisticated, finely appointed restaurant in N. Austin at 9503 Research
that underscores the recent trend toward more upscale bars and restaurants
where Sushi is prominently featured.
The service during my recent visit was impeccable.
Our server was polite, knowledgeable, and observant in that she knew
when and when NOT to approach our table.
We began with a Shiso Hasami, which is a tempura
cake made of ground shrimp and spices. I loved the texture but thought
it could have had a little more flavor.
No such complaints on the sashimi however. The maguro
(tuna) was delightful and incredibly fresh. The yellow tail or hamachi
was also delicious as was the red snapper. Again, all very fresh, with
vivid textures. Even the tako or Octopus was very tasty, if a bit on
the tough side. But I mean hey, it's an Octopus!
We then tried several types of Nigiri sushi. That
means pieces of sashimi or raw fish on a bed of rice. I prefer the Nigiri
sushi to sashimi..guess I'm just a rice lover and was introduced to
this culinary form, like most of us, at a relatively advanced age. We
tried both the cooked and the raw shrimp..both delicious. The mackerel
was exquisite with delicate flavors as was the maguro and the eel. Washed
down with a wonderful Gekkeikan Black and Gold Sake, everything here
was a treat.
We tried some regular rolls as well. The California
Roll, probably the safest choice for the sushi novice was excellent.
A little more bite than most of its kind and I liked that a lot. The
Catepillar Roll which consisted of eel, avaocado, shrimp, tako, and
sweet sauce was a treat as well. Lovely flavor here.
On the hot side, we tried a bowl of the Beef Udon
Noodle Soup. It was a bit on the bland side, not as seasoned as Udon
Soups I've had on the west coast.
Good, but not great. We also had an amazingly good green tea ice cream
and banana tempura for dessert.
In summation, Sushi Sake is more than worth your
time and attention. The sushi and sashimi were as good as any I've had
in town. And they how to take care of you there.
