Rob's Review
Lots to
love at Stonehouse Grill
Hey there, restaurant fans. THE biggest mistake you could make this weekend
would be to drive past the Stonehouse Grill. And trust me, I was looking for
it, and I drove past it. It's at 6701 Burnet Road, not far from Koenig
intersection. So get out your compass, but make a point to find the
Stonehouse this weekend. You'll be very glad you did.
This place is a labor of love. It's what the owners want to be doing , and
it shows in every dish that hits the table. I loved the grilled homemade
sausage topped with peppers and onions. And the mushrooms, stuffed with
crab, grilled, and smothered in a creamy bernaise sauce were wonderful. And
the lightly fried shrimp with a remoulade were so good we ordered another
basket.
The entrees were equally tasty. My wife tried the grilled shrimp etoufee. It
had a light yet really compelling flavor, not as heavy as other etoufees you
might have tried. My 15-year-old daughter, Lauren, liked it as well, which
is saying a lot, because her tastes have yet to evolve beyond, well, the
typical 15-year-old's. I tried two entrees: the Pork Chop which owner Alfons
describes as a "mistake." We should all make mistakes like this!
It's served with a whiskey sauce that absolutely stuns the taste buds and
the result is culinary magic! Try it. Also tasted the pork tenderloin, which
was pepper crusted and grilled and was delicious. My daughter Jennifer,
whose taste buds have evolved -- she's 21 you see -- had a perfectly cooked
filet of good old Angus beef that would have done Diamond Jim proud.
And then, the dessert. Lord almighty. We tried a Bananas Foster that was
right on the money. It was not prepared tableside, but come to think of it,
that's kind of overrated anyway. The end result is all that matters. And
this was sensational.
They've got live music outside on the weekends there as well. Have a feast
and then adjourn outside and catch the next superstar in the works before
they achieve world-wide fame, overindulge in alcohol and drugs, develop an
attitude and then buy a ranch in Fredericksburg.
