The relationship between
those in the greater Austin area who have matriculated at Texas A&M
University verses the University of Texas at Austin is often marginal
at best. So would it not appear at least slightly disingenuous to have
an Aggie restauranteur packing in all the Longhorn faithful? Well, not
if the Aggie in question happens to be the illustrious Dr. Foo.
Dr. Foo, proprieter of Satay, has a PhD in Food
Science from A&M. She came over from Thailand, from a restaurant
family, on a scholarship. She met her husband in College Station, and
has never looked back. And I want to tell you, Foo has taken her Food
Science and Thai cuisine backgrounds and blended them into one very
compelling venue.
For appetizers, I really enjoy the Tofu dumplings.
Served with a spicy, peanut sauce, they are a treat. And you must also
try the Tod Mun.
These are deep fried fish cakes with ground fish, green beans, curry
paste and Thai Spices. When I last dined at Satay, I couldn't stop eating
these things. Washed down with a nice Thai beer, they were delightful.
Another must try appetizer is the Miang Khum which are Thai spinach
wraps. Delicious.
For sheer flavor and aroma, I recommend the Phuket
Wonder. [Trying saying that very quickly three time in a row[. This
dish features string beans done in a paste that's made from roasted
chili peppers, garlic, and shallots and stir fried with oil. Unbelievable.
A meal in itself.
Another favorite is the Ginger Garlic Shrimp and
Scallop. This lovely stir fry dish blends these shellfish into a most
delectable offering. And another recommendation is the Bangkok Honey
Roast Pork served with Chinese sausage in a hauntingly sweet yet tangy
red sauce. Serious ying-yang appeal here. For dessert, try the Chocolate
Tofu Pie. If I hadn't told you, you would have never guessed that tofu
was the ingredient. Creamy and delicious. And credit that one to her
husband!
Satay is at 3202 W. Anderson Lane, a stone's
throw away from Grapevine Market. You must put this place on your list.
Don't be a foo
l. Go see Foo.
