Rob's Review
Milto’s
is right on the money
Milto's
Restaurant at 2909 Guadalupe has been here since 1977. According to Milto,
they were the first in Austin to sell pizza by the slice. Their motto back
then was, "We don't speak English but we give the best." Well,
hard for me to disagree. I don't care how badly they speak English, the food
at Milto's is always right on the money. The place just works for me.
Milto’s
is small by Austin standards, but there always seems to be room. The food is
great, but it always seems to be reasonably priced. The ambiance is well,
early Austin, but it always seems to work.
Their
menu items range from pizza (that's really quite good) to Italian and
Mediterranean fare. I've tried the meat lover's pizza with pepperoni,
Italian sausage, imported ham, onions, and extra cheese, and it's darn good.
I originally left Milto's out of my Pizza Wars piece last year, and that was
an oversight. They should have been near the top. Now, I've never understood
the allure of a pizza with chicken or pesto on it, but I guess Milto has to
keep the California types happy. So be it.
The
lasagna for $5.95 is a great deal. I wish he'd put Italian sausage on it
instead of the ground beef. But other than that, it's very good. I also like
the eggplant parmesana. They bake the eggplant as opposed to frying it and
that gives it a nicer texture.
But
I am an absolute sucker for the Greek fare. The gyros -- and don't go in and
ask for a “jie-roe” (it's “hero” -- probably was Hercules' favorite
snack) -- which are lamb and
beef blended with spices and served on pita bread with veggies and yogurt
sauce .... Well they are great. With the Greek salad and Milto's delicious
rolls, this is a fine meal at lunch or dinner. Also, try the souvlaki which
is marinated sirloin filet on pita bread. You'll love it. Or my wife's
favorite, the spanikopita, or spinach pie.
I’ll
tell you, there's not much not to like about Milto's. Parking is a bit of a
problem, but not as bad as some of the downtown restaurants. They say their
ambition is to keep their costs low and pass the savings on to the
customers. And you know what, I believe 'em. One of the great dining
bargains in Austin, Milto's. Go there and tell them Zorba sent you.
