Round Rock has never been
noted as a Mecca for fine dinning. Chain restaurants abound in the charming
little burg. But a notable and substantial exception to that is the
Main Street Grill. Proprietor Jim McKinney has crafted a wonderful little
fine-dining restaurant on Main St. It has a casual yet understated elegance
about it. I flat out like it.
For appetizers, I'm very partial to the Asian Duck
Springrolls. This is an interesting concept because they take duck confit
and mix it with a fresh julienne of vegetables, roll it in wrappers,
fry to a golden brown and serve with sweet and spicy cucumber. Another
appetizer I highly recommend is the Shrimp Diablo. This is bacon wrapped
jalapeno stuffed tiger shrimp, but the element that seals the deal is
the ancho chile honey. OOH. Very tasty.
And last visit I had the tastiest little ditty: what they called Lamb
Lollipops , actually baby lamb chops done with a wild mushroom demi
glace. Excellent. Ask for them next time if they're not on the menu.
Their warm Spinach and Brie dip is also quite good but I would suggest
a change in the unleavened bread that they use. Didn't think it complemented
the dip.
The entrees are equally compelling. I've tried the
Pasta St. Giorgio which is farfalle pasta tossed with roasted chicken,
pinoli, Gorganzola, delightful little button mushrooms, spinach, garlic,
tomatoes and cream. Accompanied by a particularly tasty garlic toast,
this is a keeper.
I like the Southwestern Roast Pork Loin as well. Their signature dish,
this is dusted in a mélange of southwest spices, slowly roasted,
and served with an elegant chipotle cream sauce that totally enhances
the flavor of the pork. Served with delightful tamale whipped potatoes,
this dish is most worthy of your attention.
The Seared Salmon is another treat. You begin with fresh Atlantic salmon,
perfectly seared, and presented with a lovely, creamy herbed risotto
topped with a red onion hollandaise. A dish worthy of the highest accolades.
And even more impressive at only $14.95.
Another wonderful side bar on Main Street Grill
is their homemade salad dressings and their wonderful salads. Try Monica's
salad which creatively blends greens, strawberries, roasted pecans and
crumbled blue cheese with their wonderful Maple Balsamic Vinaigrette
dressing. Well, all that's left for you to do now is hitch up the wagon
and take exit the 620 Off ramp off N IH-35. Main Street Grill. Very
reasonable prices for exceptional food quality.
