Rob's Review
La
Tapatia
When
the Dunkin’ Donuts on Ben White closed, I, for one openly complained about
the demise of a donut shop in an area, which in my opinion was already
seriously underdonuted. Well, time heals all wounds, and especially when out
of the ashes of a donut emporium arises a taqueria of first class quality.
Welcome to La Tapatia. The brainchild of chef Luis Hernandez, La Tapatia is
brilliant, Jalisco style tex-mex. Exceptional and inexpensive breakfast
tacos. Love the migas.
And the tostadas are wonderful. I had the "al pastor" or pork
tostadas. Pork piled high on a crispy tortilla with veggies, cheese, sour
cream....this was excellent.
I also tried the chorizo burrito. Wrapped in a large white flour tortilla,
with frijoles and vegetables mixed in with it, the flavor was compelling. It
was huge and I finished every bite.
The cheese quesadillas were also a delight. It looked a little bit like an
empanada the way they serve it, but the melted cheese was just to die for.
The chips and salsa were also close to perfect.
You can also get fajitas or a t-bone with rice, beans, French fries, and a
salad.
No enchiladas or Chile Relleno here. Just the basic stuff. And what stuff it
is.
There’s no ambiance to speak of. In fact, the interior looks every bit the
same as it did in its dunk’n’donut past life. At best, it’s a joint.
At worst, well....think food. Because the food is what really compels this
place.
Prices are reasonable to outright cheap. You cannot go wrong if you like
tacos, tostadas, tortillas, and all the related fare.
