Guero's restaurant is on
South Congress, in the heart of that revitalized, regentrified, and
refried area lovingly known as SOCO. (You know, New York has SoHO and
we have SoCo...or something like that.) Well, I wouldn't go so far as
to call Guero's regentrified, but the food is darn good.
Why, even former president and cigar lover Bill
Clinton (remember him?) liked Guero's. He even went so far as to have
the food sent out to Air Force One on one occasion while it rested on
the tarmac at Mueller airport. There's a dish on the menu called, of
course, El Presidente. What was in it? Sorry, no intern enchiladas,
but a breast of chicken taco, a beef taco, a tamale, and guacamole.
Guero's fairly hums with the frantic energy of loyal
lunch fans queuing up for the day's tex-mex fare, but it's laid back
too, if you can visualize that contrast. (Hey, it's Austin.)
I like the tortilla cheese soup to start. This vegetable
and chicken broth is stuffed with pico de gallo, avocado, jack cheese,
and of course, corn tortillas. The taste of the soup will make you shout
¡olé! or some other enthusiastic Spanish slogan.
And I love the pork tacos al carbon. The flavor
of the pork and the texture is just about perfect. Tender, excuisito,
and with a little queso and onions, on a freshly made tortilla
baby, that's some serious chowin' down.
Also try the Chicken especial. This is eminently
edible chicken cooked with tomatoes, bell peppers, onion and garlic.
The onions don't overwhelm and the other flavors are subtle, highlighting
the succulence of the chicken.
Another gotta try: more of an authentic Mexican
dish, the Alambres. This is marinated beef with bacon, bell peppers
and onions. It is grilled to absolute perfection in the popular "Al
Carbon" style. Served with tasty rice, frijoles charros, and tortillas,
it's a great buy for under ten bucks.
Guero's used to be in space on E. Oltorf now occupied
by Curras. It's bigger now in its new digs at 1412 S. Congress near
Elizabeth, but the same old Austin attitude prevails. They may not courier
your next meal out to your waiting jet, but I wouldn't let that stop
you from checking out Guero's this weekend. Prices moderate and the
food rocks. For Fox 7 News, I'm Rob Balon, dining out.
