Well, Ron and Peggy Weiss, owners of Jeffrey's and the Shoreline Grill have done it again. They have given us Cipollina, at 1213 West Lynn, across from Jeffrey's. This little Italian deli-grill-bakery is unique in Austin and totally delightful.

The theme is casual, and eat-in or take-out, whatever your pleasure. And “pleasure” is the operative word.

I started with an Italian salami called sopressata and provolone cheese sandwich on homemade bread. Delicious. This was a cold, pre-packaged sandwich. The yellowfin tuna sandwich was also a killer. They have grilled sandwiches as well.

We then sampled the duck liver pate. I love pate, and this was at the top of the charts. Smooth, with flavor that rolls over your taste buds in different stages, as a great pate should.

Next, we tried the sausage, mushroom and roasted pepper pizza. It was sensational. Great flavor, perhaps not for the uninitiated palate, meaning your kids will probably still want Mr. Gatti's, but really nice for us adults.

They have virtually unlimited pizza possibilities at Cipollina. Experiment!

Moving on to the hot and cold entrees (we did some grazing that day), we tried the roasted leg of lamb which had a very distinctive and compelling flavor, the crabcakes with basil and preserved lemon which were a treat, and the most amazing (as in I want to clean out the entire counter and bring it all home), the braised duck leg.

Hey, can we talk about this? Duck is often greasy or overdone, but this was tender, flavorful, moist, and savory.

And no, we didn't stop there.

We tried the parmesan-crusted potato balls, which were good but not to die for, the Cipollina onions in a balsamic reduction, which we both liked a lot. The asparagus was lovely, as were the green beans with apple bacon.

Amazingly, after that we had a sampling of desserts. I made the mistake of tasting Tally's special bread pudding first and I was totally spoiled after that. Rich and caramelly, with a crisper texture than most bread puddings I've tasted, blew me away.

The ricotta cheesecake was also a lighter treat.

We had some cappuccino after that and rolled out into the harsh sunlight.

Our mission accomplished, our task complete. And what did we learn? That you'd better get over to Cipollina before the lines start forming.

And tell 'em Rob Balon sent you.
