Artz Rib House, on 2330
S.Lamar, is one of those hunker down, pull up a chair kind of joints
that just has a kind of Austin rhythm to it. It's laid back, but the
easy going attitude that pervades the place in no way compromises the
quality of the food which is first rate. On second thought, I think
that attitude really enhances the food.
Artz is about BBQ: mountains of it. And Texas music.
On most nights, the two mix quite well. Movie star and frequent Austin
visitor Dennis Quaid loves the Country Style ribs. He is an Artz regular.
And who can blame him? These delightful ribs, cut from the loin, resemble
thick pork chops. Done incorrectly, these ribs could be tough. However,
cooked perfectly at Artz, they are fall-off-the-bone tender. The first
time I tried them I was smitten. They really are unique in town, no
one else does them that I'm aware of.
I also liked the smoked sausage. Tender and savory,
and without the hard casings one sees so frequently these days, the
sausage is a must try as well.
Another unique aspect of Artz culinary lineup are
the skewers of grilled shrimp. You don't see this at too many BBQ joints.
But Artz serves up two skewers for $12.95 that are grilled to perfection.
I would definitely recommend.
You know for me, an often overlooked aspect of the
BBQ experience is the sides. And I'm pleased to report that the potato
salad, and cole slaw, but particular the potato salad were of excellent
quality. Often times, it's the smaller details that really seal a great
meal, and Artz takes care of those.
Not quite as hungry? Then try the charbroiled chicken
breast with bacon and swiss sandwich. Ooh la la! This has a singlular
yet comforting flavor as does the grilled club which is another really
cool sandwich offering.
And then there's the music. Sunday's you have the
Texas Bluegrass Jam and Tuesdays brings the Texas Old Time Fiddlers.
On most other nights there are acts ranging from Blackland Prarie Boys
to the Studebakers.
So pick your BBQ favorite, or mix and match, pick your music, and go
set for a spell at Artz. I like what they're doing here. There's an
integrity to this place in the way they make their food and present
their music that just kind of grows on you. Prices are moderate and
the mood is just plain accomodating. I'm Rob Balon.
