I get a lot of letters from readers
who are interesting in finding a "fun, little, Texas joint."
You know, something with comfort food and a laid-back atmosphere.
Problem is our supply of these original emporia is running very
low. They're being replaced at an alarming rate by chains where
the biscuits and gravy are made and shipped in by some guy in Orlando.
So I'm pleased to tell you about Angel's Icehouse in Spicewood.

This is the real deal, alive and well on Highway
71 across from Backstage Steakhouse.
Angel's Icehouse is so full of delicious hill country
goodies that I literally don't know where to start. But if you want
to get an idea of what this place is all about, how about we begin with
the deep fried Macaroni and Cheese Wedges. You heard me correctly. This
is comfort food at its zenith. They are not in the least bit greasy
and are very tasty. And no respectable Texas joint would be worth its
salt without some Fried Pickles with ranch dressing. These are a must
try. As is the Chili Con Queso with real homemade chili. The flavors
hear are searing and soothing at the same time. Hard to turn down. And
how about some Fried Jalapeno Spears? These Texas treats with ranch
dressing demand the attention of comfort junkies everywhere. Finally,
the Angel's Wings lend an entirely new taste dimension to the classic
Buffalo wing. The flavor is pleasantly tangy but without that bothersome
aftertaste that can occur with Buffalo wings.
Every time I go to Angel's, I ask owners Sara or
Mary to give me some recommendations for burgers and such. And then,
creature of habit that I am, I always go back to my favorites. That
would have to be the gigantic Bacon Mushroom and Swiss Burger. I love
the way they do this burger: pressed flat on the grill so the edges
have some crispiness. And the roll is wonderfully fresh. And for chili
fans, the Chili Cheeseburger is a monstrosity of chili, melted jack
cheese and cheddar cheese, over a fresh bun. This is a 5-napkin affair
and knife and fork are required. But you will love it!
Another favorite of mine at Angel's is their delightful
Chicken Fried Steak. You won't find a better example of this genre anywhere
in the Hill Country. It's tender as all get out and the savory gravy
just oozes off the round streak and make for comfort food paradise.
Now, lest you assume that only carnivores are welcome at Angel's, you've
gotta try the Veggie Burger. This will please even the most demanding
vegetarian but on last visit, I saw a biker with multiple tattoos casting
furtive glances to his left and right while he wolfed down the veggie
burger.
And for dessert, you are doing yourself a disservice
if you don't try the Lemon Icebox Pie. That first bite delivers a beautiful
and irresistible mix of sour and sweet that'll make you a believer.
And yes, in case you haven't guessed, I really enjoy Angel's. Not exactly
a low-carb haven, but what the heck, we do need culinary sin now and
then. Right!
