The food analysts across
the country say that we're going to see a huge return to the consumption
of comfort foods in this next year. This is all a function of the need
to return to hearth and home after September 11th had so altered the
American psyche.
Well, there's nothing more comforting to me than
a good basket of boiled shrimp or some crawfish etouffee. All the better
when you get them in a family style environment. which brings us to
the Old Alligator Grill.
First off, they got me with a dozen peel n' eat
shrimp for $1.99. And these aren't tiny little popcorn critters either.
These are substantial shrimp. So my daughter and I polished off four
dozen the other night and loved every second. All for eight bucks. I
also very much enjoyed the Cajun kisses which are Jalapenos stuffed
with jack cheese and shrimp and wrapped in bacon. Nice flavor. We also
enjoyed the mushrooms stuffed with spicy shrimp and crawfish. Again,
very genuine flavors and cooked to maintain the firmness of the mushrooms.
I tried the Ya Ya Gumbo with andouille sausage and
chicken and it was a little bland for my taste. In fact, it was a lot
bland. But this is a family restaurant.
I had not such complaint however, with the crawfish
etouffee. It was smooth yet spicy and had an enormously comforting flavor.
The rice accompanying it was cooked perfectly. And it had an ample does
of crawfish. Nice dish.
The tequila lime shrimp with garlic, tequila, and
a lime sauté with a creamy fettuccine alfredo sauce was also
very good.
And my daughter's fried shrimp featured a perfect
batter, great tarter sauce, and a very light yet substantive flavor.
She loved it.
Prices are reasonable at The Alligator Grill. Many
entrees are in the single digit range. And there's two convenient locations,
one at Highway 360 and 2222 and the other at 3003 S. Lamar at Machaca.
So get your gang in gear and head out to either of these two restaurants.
It's not Gallatois, but then it ain't supposed to be.
