Rob's Review PF Chang's I don't like chains. Don't usually review them. But due to the exceptional local flavor and creativity that owner Don Rhode brings to PF Chang's, I gotta make an exception. I like Chang's, which is at Jollyville near the Arboretum. It exudes class and sophistication, attracts an upscale crowd, is a great place to be seen or to watch, whatever your pleasure,,,,,and thank God, it doesn't feel like a chain. As if we need another of those "franchise with the local flavor" concepts. Chang's feels like Austin...and let's hope that Don Rhode and his staff can keep it that way. Yes, Virginia, you have to wait sometimes at PF Chang's. Sometimes for quite a while. But it's gotta be one of the best spots to wait in town. The bar, with all the interested 30-somethings looks like a scene from La Dolce Vita. Either join in or sit back and vicariously participate. Either way, it ain't boring. And when you get to your table, your waiter mixes you your own special concoction of dipping sauces. A nice touch. But hey guys, bring back the salt and pepper. This Gajin can't make due with chili oil as a pepper substitute. But I like the waiters by and large. A lot of waiters in chains like PF Chang's tend to get too hip and almost smug. Haven't seen that yet and I appreciate it. And try the shrimp dumplings. Wonderful flavor because they don't use too much dough on the wrappers. You get the full sensation of the shrimp. And the succulent spare ribs are equally enjoyable. Got two orders on our last visit and they disappeared in record time. Then, of course, we had the Dan Dan Noodles. You don't find these much outside of Chinatown in San Francisco where they have more of an intense peanut flavor. But Chang's gets them just right. Milder, but still kicked up a few notches with the chili and ground chicken. You must try this dish. Also love the hot scallops and the wonderful Shrimp Chow Mien, with the noodles done more on the crispy side. The convergence of cultures between a former Ruth Chris's franchisee and west coast Chinese impresario have produced a successful, for the most part, chain. Although I can't see PF Chang's working in Memphis! Nonetheless, our version in Austin is worth your attention, principally because of quality food, service, and a local feel that exceeds even some of our owner operated spots. |
