This week’s Podcast takes us into the fascinating world of Hoover Alexander, southern soul food entrepreneur and owner of Hoover’s Cooking on Manor Road.

I first met Hoover 33 years ago at Toulouse on 6th Street, a New Orleans-style restaurant that had a great run. Later he cooked at Chez Fred before turning Good Eats on Barton Springs into THE place to go for weekend breakfast or lunch.

He began Hoover’s Cooking in 1998, and later opened another on Research before city red tape and bureaucracy forced him to close that location. Others would have nurtured a grudge, but not Hoover. The man wears a perpetual smile, and is one of the most dedicated altruists I’ve ever met. He is a chef with an abundance of talent but not a drop of hubris or ego. It’s no wonder so many of his original employees are still with him. It was a pleasure taping this. Hope you enjoy!
