First
Bites: Chef Chris Bauer's Wine Dinner with Kim Crawford: shows promise
for Finn and Porter
Lots of restaurants do wine dinners these days;
in fact, too many. So you pick and choose the really good ones.
The ones at Dona Emillia's are usually quite good, and the Four
Seasons as well. And Chef Chris Bauer knocked our socks off with
his cuisine for the Kim Crawford Wine Dinner at Finn and Porter
at the Hilton.
We began with an assorted sushi platter featuring a sampling of
the various offerings of the restaurant. A prosciutto-wrapped seared
Muscovy duck breast followed and it was a delight. The next course
featured a roasted Japanese style Mero (in the perch family) with
soba noodles. Loved the texture and flavor of this dish. Then came
a lovely Tournedo of Beef with a burre blanc sauce that had a hit
of foie gras in it. And finally, an Italian Cream Cake for dessert
that was pristine and delicous. Winemaker Kim Crawford, from New
Zealand, poured some stellar Cabs and Pinots along with some trash
talk about Aussie golfer and faux winemaker Greg Norman. He was
a riot, and has got some nice wines in the $15-$18 dollar range.
Look for them at Grapevine Market.
What really enthused me about the dinner was that Chef Chris Bauer
has obviously got the goods. Can't wait to sit down at the restaurant
and order off the menu.

Is
the Paggi House headed for a reopening?
Heard a rumor today
that a group of local restaurateurs have secured the Paggi House
on Riverside at S. Lamar and are planning to reopen with a more
casual concept along with an expanded beer and tequila selection.
Limited information at this point but we'll keep you posted as always
as we learn more. It would be nice to have this lovely location
back in some form, even if it won't be a replication of the original.
