Congratulations
to Dan's, Winner of the Cheeseburger Challenge

The ballots from cheeseburger
fans across the city had been counted and three finalists emerged
in the tasting contest at FOX 7 TV. Rob Balon, Ed Clements,
Joe Bickett, and Katharine Kisiel all sampled the burgers from
Huts, Sandy's and Dan's. At 7:30 Friday morning, tasting cheeseburgers
can really be a challenge. But all the judges were up to the
task and Dan's prevailed.

But congrats to all three restaurants. By making
the final three, they were all winners.

Meet Guido Doria, owner and operator of Guido's
Four Corners restaurant
at the Albertson's Shopping Center in Westlake at HIghway 360 and
Bee Caves Road.

Guido is from White Plains,
New York, but is rapidly becoming an Austinite. And I think
he has a damned good restaurant. I love the chile relleno, the
chicken fried steak, the BBQ ribs, the garlic/butter corn on
the cob, and the amazing garlic/lime vinaigrette salad. |
Guido's Four
Corners is the kind of restaurant that appeals to the local
community. No prefabbed sauces or menus dreamed up by some consultant
from LA. It's the real deal. And Guido is an authentic, charming,
first generation American who takes a lot of the old-world traditions
of service and hospitality and rachets them up a few levels.
Go meet Guido and support his restaurant. Its places like this that
keep Austin charming.

Carribean
styled "Aunt Tilly's" opens on Lake Travis
Finally, after the demise of Shagg'y's and Bahama
Breeze, there's hope for all you fans of Carribean food. Aunt Tilly's
has opened on Lake Travis. Take Stuart Road off 620 near the Village
of Lakeway to Yacht Harbor Marina. The fare is casual but what the
heck, it's on the lake. Todd Hynes, late of Ciola's, is the owner.

Santa
Rita Tex Mex Cantina set to open July 16th
Eddie Bernal's Santa Rita Tex Mex Cantina is
set to open July 16th. At 1206 W. 38th St. (site of the former Tres
Amigos).
Bernal owns the 34th Street Cafe which has a very loyal following.
Hours for the new restaurant will be Sunday-Thursday 11AM-10PM and
Friday-Saturday 11AM-11PM. Phone: 419-7482.

Lim
Ting on S. Congress Closes its Doors
Lim Ting Chinese restaurant on S. Congress has
closed. The food had occasional high spots [the pork lo mein] but
overall was mediocre.The cleanliness was additionally a real problem.
Their buffets were yucky because the oil would congeal in the pans.
The service was spotty. All in all, I'm surprised that they remained
open as long as they did.
