Beware of Subway at junction of 620 and 71 in Bee Caves

Okay, this is a true story. My daughter came home from her dorm at St. Edwards on Sunday night and asked if I would go out and get some subs. Obliging dad that I am, I went to the only place that was open near our neighborhood, the Subway adjacent to the gas station. Now, I am not a Subway afficionado by any means. But one does what one has to do on occasion for one's children. And so I went.

This is one of those Subways that coexists with a convenience store/ gas station. I went over to the counter and the young man behind barely looked at me. He didn't speak. Finally, after an uncomfortable few moments, I stated that I wanted to get some subs. He looked at me as if I had presented him with a note demanding all the money from his cash register. "How many"? he said glumly.

I won't bore you with the rest of the story, but it went down hill from there. Not only was it the worst service I have ever received in Austin, they were three of the worst subs we'd ever tasted. All three sub rolls were stale and the frowning man never wore plastic gloves. And, of course after I paid, no "thank you" or anything remotely close to it.

According to the convenience store manager, this amazingly rude employee has been there for 8 months. How he's managed to do it is beyond me.

Who was it that said 90% of success is just showing up?

A word of advice. Frequent the convenience store there at the corner of 620 and 71. They've got very friendly and helpful folks who work there. But stay the hell away from the Subway at the south end of the store. If Subway weight-loss pitchman Jared had been dependent on this subway for his food, God knows how his story might have turned out.

Atkins Friendly Menu Initiated by El Arroyo

Clay McPhail has always been on the cutting edge of the Austin restaurant business. McPhail, owner of El Arroyo on W. 5th St, aka, The Ditch, has begun offering an Atkins-friendly low carb array of choices.

Some of the items? How about the Ditch Chicken, a grilled chicken breast topped with poblano peppers and covered with Monterrey Jack Cheese. Served with sauteed spinach or mushrooms? I tried this and it's great. This has 0.2 grams of carbs.

Or Ranchero Pescado? A sauteed filet of snapper topped with onions, tomatotes, cheese, and mushrooms. This has 2.2 grams and is delicious.

Check out El Arroyo for their other non Atkins muy bueno food as well.

Will Packwood hopes to roll lucky "7" at former site of Lambert's on S. Congress

Award winning chef Will Packwood, who formerly helmed the excellent but unlucky Emilia's, has rolled the dice with Granite Cafe's Sam Dickey and come up with a seafood concept at the site of the former Lambert's on S. Congress. The name: "7." As in the seven seas. Opening date is imminent: March 1st.

Packwood has indicated that the prices at "7" will bear no resemblance to his former restaurant (you may remember they were the first to break the $40 entree barrier) and will mirror the price structure of other restaurants in the area like Vespaio.

As for Lou Lambert's popular eaterie? The owner heard the clarion call of the hotel industry and could not resist.

Packwood and Dickey also have another restaurant in the works in N. Austin which we will keep you posted on.
