South
Austin Discovery: La Posada on Westgate at William Cannon
I stumbled on to a neat little Mexican joint
last week. It’s called La Posada and it’s on Westgate near William
Cannon. (In a strip mall that has a Starbuck’s.)
 |
I had the Migas and they were actually
quite good: moist and very flavorful. The corn tortillas were
also good as was the salsa: very piquant without being too
hot.
They’ve been there 14 years according
to the waiter. So what the hell took me so long? Lo siento
mucho!

The
Belmont Opens on 6th St. Next to Maiko Sushi
You want to talk instant critical mass? Cachet
by the boat loads? Austin has a new hot spot. Is it a restaurant?
Is it a bar? Depends on when you go. But the 25-34 crowd, always
in search of something scorching, have anointed this place with
their blessing. I guess it must have something to do with owner
Matt Lucky’s reputation. And Daryl Coonus has been around the
block as well (Oslo and Uchi).
HUGE lines around the block last Saturday
night. All the beautiful people out to meet other beautiful (or
at least somewhat wealthy) people. Lots of little black dresses
in view.
How’s the food? Who the hell knows? I haven’t
been able to fight my way through the teeming masses long enough
to really order something. But my Bloody Mary was pretty darn
good. And I did see a menu though and it looks reasonable. Lots
of sandwiches, salads, and I thought I saw a Cubano on there (always
one of my favs).
We’ll keep you posted as always.

Renowned
Dallas Steakhouse III Forks to open in Austin on October 24th
Downtown is booming. Seems like everything
down there is just exploding. So what better time for the opening
of a seriously cool Steakhouse icon like III Forks of Dallas?
The way a steakhouse achieves legendary status
is by almost fanatical attention to the core details that matter
most: of the 25.5 Billion pounds of beef processed in the USA
last year, only 2.5% graded out at Prime, the highest standard.
Of the 700 processors of beef, only six made the grade to become
vendors to III Forks. So the steaks are at the top of the food
chain. Less than one half of one percent of all beef processed
in the US makes its way to the plates of II Forks.
Restaurant vet Curtis Osmond will manage the
restaurant. I met him last week and he is amiable and very attuned
to the needs of Austin diners. He’s the kind of manager who knows
the front of the house as well as the back. That means he knows
the right people to hire. And that usually means excellent AND
consistent dining experiences.
The restaurant will open on Tuesday,
October 24th will be located on Lavaca at Cesar Chavez. I’m looking
forward to it.

Chinatown
Center Opens on N. Lamer Just South of Braker
Austin just got a massive infusion of Asian
culture and commerce in the form of the Chinatown Center which
opened on N. Lamar just south of Braker.
The center houses over 20 different businesses
and a bunch of restaurants. They include: First Chinese BBQ, Pho
Saigon Vietnamese Noodle House, Short n’ Sweet Café, TC
Noodle House, Wok on Fire, Lily’s Sandwich, and Com Chi Food to
Go. And of course, the M.T. Supermarket.
I will work my way through these spots and
give you an update soon. But don’t wait for me. Check it out and
let me kow what you think.

Galaxy
Café Opens on West Lynn
After passing on a spot at the Texas Triangle
at 47th and N. Lamar, Galaxy Café opened its second location
at 1000 West Lynn. I really enjoy the Galaxy menu (especially
the breakfast fare) and the pleasant Austin vibe that one gets
from this place. Phone is 478-3434. Hours are Monday-Sunday from
7am-10pm.

Zax
Pints and Plates to Ring in Oktoberfest on Oct. 19th
 |
One of our favorite restaurants and brew
pubs, Zax Pints and Plates at Riverside and Barton Springs,
is holding their second annual Oktoberfest celebration. I
went to the first one and it was a blast.
They’ve got the obligatory oom-pah-pah
band (The New Austin Polka Band) performing on the patio and
they’ve gonna have beer brats and kraut in addition to their
full menu. And a huge selection of German beers served in
humongous beer steins.
|
Sound like fun?
Then put on your lederhosen (or not) and
get down to Zan on the 19th from 6-10pm. I’ll see you there. In
the immortal words of JKF, “ Ich bien ein Oktoberfester.”
