Join
Rob’s Reducers as They Compete in 1 Ton of Fun for Charity
 |
OK, the deal is that
Danny Baker, GM of FOX 7 called me several months ago and suggested
this would be a good thing for me to do. That is, assemble a
team of folks who want to lose weight, join nine other teams
captained by other semi-celebrity fatties (Mark Katz, Bob Cole,
Todd Jeffries of KLBJ-AM, Damian Mendola, to name a few) and
do it all to raise money for Big Brothers/Big Sisters. |
Now, if you’ve seen Danny Baker, he is a serious
runner and weighs about as much as my right thigh. So how could
I refuse? I mean, I want to look like Danny some day.
Hence, welcome to 1 Ton of Fun. Hatched by Big
Brother’s CEO Kenny Taylor and Paul Carozza of Run Tex, the idea
is that as Captains of our teams, the celebrity fatties would put
it on the line and dedicate themselves to six months of losing weight.
The key being sensible weight loss through exercise and modification
of diet. The idea is each team member loses 20 pounds. 10 teams
and 10 members per team = 2,000 pounds. Or more. Clearly, my goal
is more than 20.
I’m captain of Rob’s Reducers. Our coach is
triathlon expert Carrie Sapp. My team consists of my lovely wife
Marge, my daughter Jennifer, song bird and Dell super salesperson
and her husband, computer whiz John Taylor, architect David Minter,
massage therapist Sandy Yates, Four Seasons chef German Villatoros,
banker Gary [aka Poppi] Jerome, construction magnate Britanie Olivera
and text book guru Art San Miguel. We had our weigh-in on Saturday.
Depressing, but at least we know where we stand.
Over the next six months, and can follow us
here on www.diningoutwithrobbalon.com
and Wednesday mornings on FOX 7, we’ll try to take off some lbs.
The idea is for each of us to find sponsors for each pound lost.
If you’d like to be a sponsor, just shoot me an email and tell me
how much per pound you’d like to contribute. It all goes to a great
cause. As a former Big Brother myself, I can attest to that.
Wish us luck. Over the next six months, I’ll
also be devoting a segment of time on our site and on my FOX 7 and
KLBJ-AM programs toward healthier dining.

New
Menu Items at Pronto Italiano
Pronto Italiano has
added a new Panini category to their menu. Panini (singular, panino)
is Italian for sandwiches. Each Panini is cooked on a panini press
which grills the bread and melts the cheese. Perfect for lunch or
dinner, they're served on fresh Italian bread with kettle chips!

Monica’s
701 in Georgetown Closes
The sister restaurant of Round Rock’s Main Street
Grill, Monica’s 701 in old downtown Georgetown has closed. They
had the classic problems of so many smaller, upscale restaurants:
too much rent and not enough customers. My impressions of this restaurant
were pretty much favorable, although I did have a poor experience
there once. But they were simply unable to generate a critical mass
of loyal core customers: the kind of base that places like this
need to survive.

Old
San Francisco Steakhouse Shuts its Doors
Well, there you have it: the end of an era.
The restaurant that gave you the girl on the swing, The Old San
Francisco Steakhouse, is no more. And if there was ever a restaurant
that deserved to pass away, it was this one. They had unrealistically
high price points and a décor that felt like you had stepped
into 1961.
Good restaurants have to evolve and this
one never kept up the pace.
