When
is Hoover’s on Research Going to Open?
We’ve probably gotten
more mail about this anticipated opening than anything we’ve received
this year. As many of you know, Hoover Alexander, my favorite down
home chef and owner of Hoover’s
Cooking on Manor Road, has signed a lease to open a third Hoover’s
at Research and Anderson Mill in the building that housed Ray’s
Steakhouse.
Okay, so when the heck is it going to open?
The answer is: virtually any day. Hoover is waiting on final permits
from the city and as soon as they’re approved, it’s off to the races.
As always, keep logging in to www.diningoutwithrobbalon.com
because you’ll hear it first here!

Photos: The Bush Twins at the new Doc’s Motor Works
 |
It’s got to be
a major pain in the butt to have some paparazzi following
you wherever you go. Such is the burden of celebrity. In the
case of the Bush twins, they’ve got Secret Service guys to
keep the photo maniacs at bay, right? So how did this photo
get snapped? Well, however it originated, since it is food
related, we thought we’d share it with you.
|
By the way, if you
haven’t been to Doc’s on S. Congress, it features good Tex-Mex and
American comfort food.

Taverna
opens on 2nd St in the new “entertainment” district
The city’s grand vision of a retail and restaurant
paradise in the 2nd-3rd street area continues to unfold with the
recent opening of Taverna at 258 West 2nd St. Part of a smallish
chain, with sister restaurants in Dallas and Miami, Taverna is
an Italian bistro with entree prices ranging from $12 to $18 dollars.
The Gnocchi di Spanaci alla Bolognese is a dish that will be first
on my “must try” list.
While I would have preferred the new district to be populated
with locally owned and operated restaurants, the place has a nice
feel inside with an open kitchen. And the manager actually has
an Italian last name. For reservations: 477-1001.

Wahoo:
Caliifornia Chain featuring Fish Tacos and more opens on Rio Grande
off 6th
Wahoo, the first Austin location of a chain
from California and Colorado, opens Friday, January 13th on Rio
Grande just south of 6th St. The basic building block of the cuisine
is funky and crunchy fish tacos. But there’s more. They offer
fast- casual Mexican with other influences including Asian and
Hawaiian. Hence, the Banzai Bowl and the Maui Bowl.
It’s a big, comfortable yet inviting place.
Started by three bothers: Wing, Ed and Mingo Wahoo, the chain
now has over 30 locations.. Check out their web site at www.wahoos.com.

Slice Pizza Opens on South Congress
A new pizza joint called Home Slice has opened
at S. Congress. Across from Guero’s. The pizza is New York style
and you can check out their website at www.homeslicepizza.com.
When I’ve had a chance to sample it, I’ll give you my take. They
claim on their web site that they have pizza that could stand
the test in New Haven, Ct. If that is indeed the case, then watch
out! Phone: 444-7437.

Aussie-Styled
Boomerang to Open on Gualalupe
A new restaurant featuring Australian-style
meat pies will open at 3110 Guadalup at 31st ½ St. It’s
called Boomerang and it’s the brainchild of Jack and Emile Fennell
who got the idea while living down under and watching the reactions
as Americans sampled these pies for the first time. The pies are
filled with delicious meats and vegetables and feature homemade
flaky crust.
Their pies run the gamut from Southwest
Adobe Chicken to Texas BBQ Beef and several of the original Australian
favorites as well. Grand opening is January 27th with a special
event to celebrate Australian day on the 26th (sounds like a thinly
veiled excuse to get hammered to me). But what the hell! Check
it out.

JC’s
Steakhouse on N. IH-35 Closes
JC’s Steakhouse, the popular restaurant owned
by Sonic entrepeneur Jerry Conway and his partner Jerrel Chote,
closed the weekend of Jan. 21st. Located at the site of the former
Bombay Bicycle Club, JC’s carved out an immediate niche upon its
opening by serving killer Smoked Prime Rib and an outstanding Gumbo
among other delights.
But their location weighed against them and
the smoking ban was the final nail in the coffin. We had two Gonzo
Gourmet Dinners there that were much enjoyed and I personally will
miss this restaurant.

Fortune
Pho 75 on N. Lamar Closes
One of my favorite little Vietnamese/Chinese
places: Fortune Pho 75 on N. Lamar has closed. Really enjoyed their
Vermicelli Bowls. No news on any relocation yet but as always, we’ll
keep you posted.

Indian
favorite Rushi closes on N. IH 35
Again, one of my favorites bites the dust. This
was a superb little restaurant that just couldn’t get off the ground.
The food was way past your typical Indian buffet. Continues to underscore
the fact that the Indian Restaurant scene is a tough one to make
work in Austin.

Bubba’s
Ice House Closes in Cedar Park
One of my favorite
burger joints out Cedar Park way, Bubba’s Ice House, has closed
its doors. Apparently the shopping center in which it was located
was sold and many of the tenants were forced out.
Word has it that the owner is looking
to lease new space and reopen. We’ll keep you posted on his success.

Crescent
Street Beignets Closes Its Doors
Long a staple on W.
6th St., Austin’s beignet emporium recently closed its doors. It
wasn’t the Café du Mond in New Orleans, but on a good night,
the beignets were in that ball park. The rest of their Cajun fare
was mediocre, however. Too bad, ‘cause I loved those beignets.
