It’s Italian on Bratton Lane

First this location was the original Gumbo’s. Then it was Yoli’s Jambalaya. Then it was Gumbo’s Central. Now, it has been reborn as It’s Italian. Proprietors Johnathan and Lucretia Doyer also own the iconic Little Deli on Woodrow. They are passionate about what they do and we’ve been getting rave reviews from readers. The fare features lots of red sauces, so if you can’t make it to Naples, head to Bratton Lane for some mom and pop Italian.

Romanian Restaurant Drakula Opens at Anderson Square

Well, you’ll all remember Vlad the Impaler, that mad Transyvanian ruler who was the inspiration for Bram Stoker’s classic vampire novel, Dracula. Well, he’s now the inspiration behind an Austin restaurant. Drakula has opened in the strip mall on Anderson Square adjacent to the Capital City Comedy Club.

The fare, as you might expect, is Romanian. What’s that, you say? Well, it’s similar to Hungarian. Drakula is family owned and features dishes like Stuffed Cabbage, Stuffed Peppers, Ground Beef and Pork “Mici” with garlic and spices, Pork Schnitzel and more.

And it doesn’t appear that the prices will impale you either. All the entrees are under $10! Open daily for lunch and dinner. Call 374-9291, Ask for Nick.

Beluga Sushi and Japanese Opens in Round Rock across from Dell

A new sushi and Japanese restaurant has emerged at the site of the former Tanoshi at Exit 250 in Round Rock. The address of the new player, called Beluga, is at 661 Louis Henna Bld. Phone is 255-6454

I have gotten an unusually large number of very positive emails about this place. And I’m told that during weekday lunches, they are offering 2-1 sushi. That’s very cool.

The owner is Jae Chang and they seem to be very serious about their store. I’m heading up there soon to check them out.

360 Uno and Pizza Gallery Storm into Davenport Village

The outlook for Pizza in Westlake just got a little brighter with the addition of 360 Uno and The Pizza Gallery in Davenport Center off Highway 360 near the Lake Austin Bridge.

The pizza is Neapolitan style with thin and crispy crust, and there are soups, salads, pastas, and a wine selection so impressive that Wine Spectator has already given the place kudos. A variety of confections awaits including canoli's made in Sicily and luxurious gelato and sorbetto.

You can dine in or take out but anyway you slice it, this is a spot worth checking out. Call 327-4448 for more information. Website is www.360uno.com.

Opal Divine’s Opens Second Location on S. Congress at Penn Field

One of our favorite pubs, Opal Divine’s Freehouse, has opened a second location on S. Congress just south of St. Edwards University.

This new location boasts more seating room than the original, a large kitchen, and a lovely outdoor deck that is being set up for live music.

I had lunch there last week and the Philly Cheesesteak was a blast. Of course, their famous black pepper fries were also mandatory. And I love their wurst plate.

Owner Michael Parker is man of spirits, so to speak. He is totally in to Scotch Whiskey and regularly hosts single malt tastings at his restaurant. Lately, he has become a Tequila aficionado as well, traveling into the heart of Mexico to bring back blends of agave.

Bordeaux’s in Kyle features home-style blend of Steaks, Seafood and Pasta

Take exit 213 off IH 35- South and you will discover a new, owner operated restaurant called Bourdeaux’s.

Larson and Kasey Wilkes are the owners and operators of this little bistro that’s already starting to build some buzz.

Lest the name fool you, however, the accent on this Bordeaux is not French but drifts toward the Cajun.

Dishes such as Blackened Catfish, Bayou Shrimp Scampi, and Cajun Fried Steak can be found on their menu.

Prices for dinner range from $12 to $24 [filet mignon] and the appetizers are reasonably priced as well.

Call 512- 268-3463.

Sherlock’s Baker St. Pub and Grill opens at former site of UR Cooks at Research and Burnet

So, have you been longing for some Shepherd’s Pie or perhaps some Bangers and Mash? Well, that and other British pub food is now yours for the taking at Sherlock’s Baker Street Pub and Grill. This smallish Texas chain has taken over the old UR Cooks space at Research and Burnet.

The place reminds me of Fado’s on 4th St. except that it’s English, not Irish.

They have lots of different beers on tap and a liberal happy hour every day from 2PM till 9PM. Place is open nightly until 2AM. Ironically, their late night fare veers radically away from English grub and much more toward American comfort bar food (chicken tenders, jalapeno poppers, buffalo wings, et. al).

Cathy's Steak House on Mesa Closes

This was a fun little restaurant hosted by the charming Cathy. Problem was, she couldn't figure out if she wanted Vietnamese, Chinese, Steak or Seafood. And so she served everything. It was good but a bit confusing. She had a pretty loyal crowd of regulars but the competition is ferocious out there. A taped message on their answering machine says that the restaurant will reopen next month under the name Mesa Ranch.

Tony Roma's at Lakeline Mall Closes

After three years of dishing up ribs and those classic onion rings at their Lakeline Mall location, Tony Roma's has closed. Previous conversation with franchisee Jay Green had pointed toward the opening of a new TR store on Highway 360 in Westlake, but that move appears to have stalled as well.

Opening soon (about two weeks) at the Tony Roma's location will be a Serrano's
