Burgers Formed by Hand

Cedar Park has just received an early Christmas present in the form of the new Mighty Fine Burger store that opened September 2nd at 183a and 1431. This is the kind of owner-operated place where no detail regarding quality is overlooked, and where the staff has an unrelenting commitment to customer satisfaction. It’s a great fit for Cedar Park! And the burgers, dogs, shakes and fries are pretty darn good as well.

The menu at Mighty Fine is relatively brief, and I’m OK with that. Do what you do best and knock it out of the park every lunch and dinner. The patties are ground on-site to guarantee that utmost in freshness. So let’s deconstruct the star of their menu: The Mighty Fine Cheeseburger. They cook them a shade north of medium but they’ll do medium if you request it (I like ‘em that way). This is one tasty and humongous cheeseburger. I typically add everything that can be added (lettuce, tomatoes, onions, jalapenos) along with the white (mayo) and the “yeller” (mustard). It just flat-out rocks. Or you can eschew the cheese and order a plain Hamburger where the same sensibilities apply. With both burgers though, the taste begins with the incredibly fresh rolls. Any burgermeister worth his salt understands that, and Mighty Fine takes great pains to produce rolls worthy of the beef.

If you like Hot Dogs there is something at Mighty Fine for you! They do a Chopped Chili Dog that pretty much defines the genre. Now as a rule I’m not a big fan of Chili Dogs, but I have to make an exception at Mighty Fine. The chili has a comforting flavor that complements the flavor of the hot dog. The balance is good, and the taste follows right along as you would expect. Neat dog.

And then there are the famous Mighty Fine fries. Even though I’ve been low-carbing it lately, these fries are a guilty pleasure. They are made from scratch and the freshness is evident in every crinkly, crispy bite. Add a little or a lot of red (ketchup) and savor every last one of these. They are about as tasty as you’re going to find (different from Hyde Park) but equally good.

The drink menu is relatively short at Mighty Fine as well. Shakes and lemonade. But again, the quality is completely obvious in every sip. The Strawberry shake is my favorite: dense, creamy, and with a wonderful texture. The straw stands straight up in the shake and that’s always a good sign. The lemonade is tart and very pleasant. Again, the freshness of the lemons is abundantly obvious.

The owners of Mighty Fine were recently awarded the highly-coveted and contested Malcom Baldridge Award for performance excellence. One visit to Cedar Park or any of the other Austin locations will give you a sense of why Mighty Fine is well, so darned Mighty Fine.
