Korean Food Ramping Up in Austin

I’ve loved Korean food since I first tried Bulgogi and Kimchi at a friend’s house back in the 70’s. It took a while for the local restaurant scene to plant their flags, but things are moving forward. Reading Melanie Haupt’s excellent piece in the most recent Chronicle brought back a flood of flavor memories. The aromas of the departed Koreana, and the delightful lunches at Koriente downtown.

And I have tried Chosun Galbi behind Shanghai at Middle Fiskville and I-35. That’s probably my new fav right now. Wonderful Beef Bulgogi (Korean BBQ).

I also like Arirang on Airport, and of course the tasty newbie Korean Komfort. But compared to all the Thai, Japanese, Chinese, and Vietnamese spots around town Korean cuisine is still in its relative infancy.

Do yourself a favor and check out a local Korean restaurant. The cuisine is really quite amazing and inordinately healthy.
