Hopdoddy Burger Bar

We are living in an age in Austin that just when you thought you couldn’t possibly have another burger success story, several more pop up. We talked about All Star Burger last month and now it’s Hopdoddy, a wildly popular joint on South Congress (lines almost every day) and with a 2nd location on Anderson.

Hopdoddy is all about burgers and beverages (many in the adult category). And there are so many great choices in the burger category.

The Classic Burger is aptly named. Everything you’d expect in a classic is there: angus beef, red leaf lettuce, white onion, huge beef steak tomatoes, their “sassy sauce” and of course cheese or bacon if preferred. The bun is uber fresh and the taste is well, classical. The Goodnight is a different twist. Begin with the beef, add Tillamook Cheddar (from Oregon), caramelized onions, hickory sauce and of course more sassy sauce. This is another amazing burger: the kind people stand in line for.

The Magic Shroom is another serious piece of burger magic. This adds Texas goat cheese, Field mushrooms, and Mayo and Basil Pesto. If you love fungi like I do, you will love this burger. The tastes are at once mellow and riveting. Sounds like it shouldn’t work but boy does it ever!

The Llano Poblano is another wise choice. Like the fiery taste of roasted Poblanos? Then this is for you. The combination of beef, pepper jack, roasted Poblanos, apple-smoked bacon and chipotle mayo is a major taste sensation.

Then finally, if you follow Ted Turner and his passion for bison, then you’ll like the Buffalo Bill. The meat is low in fat, pretty darned moist considering, and covered with Bleu Cheese, Frank’s hot sauce, apple-smoked bacon and of course, you guessed it, sassy sauce. I am as a rule not a bison fan but this could make me one.

It seems almost redundant to talk about salad at a burger emporium but the Hail Caesar is worth a mention. Fresh romaine hearts and spicy fired chick peas are the nucleus of this tasty concoction, with of course shaved Parmesan.

The Kennebec fries and custom shakes (an intriguing selection) round out the menu and they’re good. The Raspberry White Chocolate shake is my favorite and it rocks. Adult beverages abound at Hopdoddy as well from micro brews (the Bucket Head IPA) to the Black Cherry Limeade with gin or vodka. So stand in line at Hopdpddy and know it’s going to be worth it.
