EurAsia Sushi Bar & Seafood Celebrates Grand Opening in Austin’s Oak Hill

We told you last week that EurAsia Sushi Bar & Seafood had opened at the Y in Oak Hill. I had the chance to attend the grand opening on May 4th and it was so much more than the usual pomp and circumstance one sees at these things. There was genuine warmth among the guests and heartfelt gratitude shown by the owners, whose parents traveled from Indonesia for the occasion.

The crowd included the Indonesian Trade Minister from Houston, people who had worked on various aspects of the design and construction of the restaurant, media types like KEYE meteorologist Chikage Windler and myself, very lovely and talented Indonesian folk dancers, and friends of the owners and regular customers. The mood was cordial and convivial. And the food was a blast.

I tried the Bakso Sapi, an Indonesian styled Pho with homemade meatballs, tofu, scallions, roasted garlic and both egg and rice noodles in a savory beef broth. This is said to be Barack Obama’s favorite dish. I can see why.

The Sofia Roll with spicy tuna, cilantro and cucumber along with salmon, yellowtail and tobiko was also quite good and a good indication that Japanese and Indonesian cuisines can complete each other on the same menu.

Indonesian cuisine features many seafood delicacies and the Fresh Sautéed Grouper with sauteed  garlic spinach and fried sweet plantains was a spicy and crispy example. This was a really compelling dish for such a festive occasion.

Even the simple Fruit Tarte served for dessert had a rich and satisfying flavor without being too heavy.

This restaurant is a huge step forward for a shopping center that has been in great need of some more refinement lately. And it’s a much needed addition to the ethnic cuisines that have been lacking not just in Oak Hill but across the city.
